A wireframe is a structural sketch of a screen or a page that shows where each element (menu, title, button, image, text) is placed and how the information is organized, but without colors, final fonts, or real images. It is the step between a hand-drawn sketch and a high-fidelity prototype: more organized than a sketch, but still far from the final look.
Usually created using simple boxes and lines in shades of white, grey, or black, wireframes define the positioning of each element on the page, such as buttons, titles, images, or forms. To indicate the approximate size of the content, the text used is generally generic or simplified. They can be created on paper, on a whiteboard, or through digital applications such as Figma, Balsamiq, or Sketch. Depending on the level of detail of the structure, wireframes can be low-fidelity (schematic and extremely simple) or medium-fidelity, while still maintaining an appearance without a complete visual design.
Because we do not encounter visual elements that distract attention (color palette, images), a wireframe gives the team and clients a focus only on structure and functionality, such as the placement of buttons, which information takes priority, and how it guides the user from one step to another. It brings possible problems with the information architecture to the surface before someone invests their time in visuals.
It is the step that usually comes after sketching ideas (more organized and clearly communicated) and before high-fidelity prototypes. It is used to align the team and the client on the structure of a page or application before investing in the final visual design, and it is useful for quickly testing whether the logical flow of a page makes sense, without anyone being distracted by colors or style.
Because it can look unfinished, some clients need more context in which it is explained that a wireframe does not represent the final product, but only a sketch of it, in order to move forward with the creation of the final product.
