Through usability testing, you directly evaluate, together with real users, whether a product or application can be navigated easily, efficiently, and without difficulties. The method involves assigning a clear task and carefully observing every step taken by the participant. This approach provides practical confirmation of the actual functionality of a design, going beyond simple theoretical assumptions.
A participant is given a realistic task (“find this product and complete the order”) on a prototype, live website, or application, without additional instructions on how to do it. The researcher observes where the participant hesitates, where they make mistakes, how long it takes them to complete the task, and whether they succeed or give up. It can be conducted face-to-face, with the researcher present and taking notes, or remotely, using tools that record the screen and interactions. It can be conducted on a wireframe, an interactive prototype, or the final product, depending on the stage of the project.
Unlike a simple subjective opinion (such as “it looks good”), this method is based on directly observed behavior. Usability testing reveals concrete obstacles that users encounter when using the product, such as a button that is difficult to notice, an ambiguous form, or a redundant step. These aspects often become invisible to the design team, which, by working closely with the project, loses the perspective of a user experiencing it for the first time.
This evaluation is recommended to be carried out in rapid iterations throughout product development, rather than as a simple analysis at the end of the project. The process involves going through a continuous cycle: testing a version, collecting data, refining the solution, and reevaluating it. The method can be effectively applied both in the early stages of prototyping and to functional products, with the aim of optimizing existing functionalities.
