Research Plan

A research plan is a document you create before starting a research project. It lays the foundation for your research by defining what you want to find out and how you plan to do it. This way, you have a clear direction to follow, instead of simply collecting information at random, only to realize later that you are missing an important piece of information and that you have spent time on less relevant details.

The most important thing when creating a research plan is to answer a few simple questions. What is the objective of your research? What do you actually want to find out, and why does it matter right now? What decision or project will the outcome be used for?

What is the purpose? What is truly important, and what can be left aside when creating the plan? Sometimes, when we create different types of plans, we tend to get lost in the details. Then comes the approach: what channels will you use to gather information? These might include competitors' websites, interviews with users or clients, existing data, online searches, or existing studies. And what method will you use for each source?

In general, you should also include a timeline or a sequence of steps, especially if the research needs to be completed by a specific date. Last but not least, you should define what the final output will look like, whether that means a written report, a presentation, a set of recommendations, or simply structured notes for someone who will continue working based on your findings.

The research plan is the reference document you return to throughout the research process to make sure you have not drifted away from what you originally set out to find. It is also useful for aligning an entire team before the project begins. This way, everyone knows what needs to be investigated, who is responsible for what, and when each task needs to be completed.

In agencies and marketing or UX teams, a research plan usually comes before activities such as a competitive analysis, user research, a content audit, or a brand strategy, essentially, any project where the final decision needs to be based on verified information rather than assumptions alone.
