Product Design

Product design is the complete process through which a product (physical or digital) is created around the real needs of users, from understanding the problem, through exploring ideas and testing, to the final solution, which is functional and easy to use. It does not refer only to how the product looks, but to how it works, what problems it solves, and how well it fits what people actually need.

The process combines different stages: initial research to understand the real problem, sketching ideas and exploring solutions, creating prototypes, from simple, low-fidelity versions to high-fidelity prototypes, almost identical to the final product, validation testing, where the solution is presented to users to check the functionality of the product. Validation testing, through which the solution is put in front of users to check whether it works; and continuous refinement, based on what the tests show. Product design often combines skills from UX design, UI design, research and, in many teams, business strategy as well.

The main objective is not only to create a visually appealing product, but one that is truly valuable. It must be useful (solving an authentic problem), easy to use (providing a smooth experience, without obstacles), and viable (sustainable for the company’s financial and business objectives). A successful product design harmonizes all three of these dimensions, without favoring one at the expense of the others.

Within agencies and development teams, product design functions as an all-encompassing framework that includes the entire journey, from the initial investigation to the market launch. To ensure that the final version is successfully adopted and appreciated by users, design specialists work closely with the engineering, marketing, and product management departments.

At the same time, product design does not follow a strictly linear trajectory, but represents an iterative activity. Instead of going through each phase only once, teams constantly return to previous stages as new data is obtained from testing or from the feedback received.
