An observational study is a research method in which you observe how people behave naturally, without intervening, asking questions, or asking them to do something specific. Unlike an interview or a focus group, where people tell you what they think or what they do, here you simply observe what happens in reality.
The researcher stays on the sidelines, either physically or online, and records the subject’s behaviors, interactions, and actions as they happen, without influencing them through their presence. Observation can be conducted discreetly, without the people being observed knowing about it (undisclosed observation), or openly, when participants know they are being observed but the researcher still does not intervene (disclosed observation). It can take place in a real-world environment (a store, a website, an office) or in a controlled environment, such as a usability lab, where participants are given a task to complete and their journey is observed.
This method is valuable because people rarely remember every action accurately, and they tend to rationalize their behavior retrospectively. Through direct observation, researchers can identify authentic behavioral patterns: spontaneous hesitations, elements that are completely ignored, the actual path people take instead of the one outlined in the instructions, as well as recurring errors.
This is the basic method behind usability testing in user experience, where you observe a user trying to complete a task on a website or in an app and note where they get stuck.
The presence of an observer in a study can influence participants’ behavior. In addition, interpreting observed data involves a certain degree of subjectivity. For this reason, it is often recommended to involve two independent observers who can evaluate and document the same sessions in parallel.
