One of the most commonly used methods is “Crazy 8s,” an exercise in which each team member comes up with 8 distinct variations of the same idea within 8 minutes. This approach helps the team move beyond the first intuitive option and explore more diverse solutions.
Because it is a quick and low-cost process, an unsuccessful sketch will only cost you a few minutes. Sketching encourages bolder and more varied ideas than you might feel comfortable proposing directly in a polished design tool. It also helps the team compare several directions side by side before investing time in a single solution.
In product design, sketching ideas happens early in the design process, once the problem has been clearly defined based on research, interviews, and feedback analysis, but before building wireframes or prototypes. It is an inexpensive way to test multiple directions and decide, together with the team, which options are worth developing further.
