Focus Groups

A focus group is a qualitative research method in which a group of people, usually around 6–10 participants, represents the target audience you want to understand. The purpose is to learn more about a product, service, idea, or concept under the guidance of a moderator.

Participants are selected based on clear criteria such as age, purchasing behavior, use of a specific product, or belonging to a particular customer segment, so that the group reflects as closely as possible the audience you want to study. The discussion is led by a moderator who follows a question guide prepared in advance, while also leaving room for unexpected directions that may emerge during the conversation. A focus group usually lasts between 60 and 90 minutes, can take place either in person or online, and is almost always recorded (video or audio) so that it can be analyzed later by the research team or the client.

Unlike a survey, where you receive short and quantifiable answers, a focus group can reveal motivations, perceptions, hesitations, and spontaneous reactions, things that people might not necessarily express in a form, but that they may share when they hear someone else's opinion or when they are prompted to react on the spot to an idea, package design, brand message, or prototype.

Both UX and marketing agencies commonly organize focus groups before launching a campaign or product, in order to test how the audience will react to a brand concept, key messages, or a design before investing in production. They are often used alongside quantitative research: a survey tells you “how much” and “how many,” while a focus group tells you “why” and “how people feel about it.”

It is important to remember that the results of a focus group are not representative of the population as a whole, as the group is too small. In addition, a single person may have strong opinions and influence the rest of the participants. For this reason, a focus group is a useful method for generating ideas and understanding perceptions, but it is rarely sufficient on its own to support a major business decision.
