An empathy map is a collaborative visualization that captures what a user says, thinks, does, and feels in relation to a product or task. Built from research data such as interviews and observation sessions, it helps teams step out of their own assumptions and align around a shared understanding of the user's experience, motivations, and pain points.
Empathy maps are most useful early in the design process, before personas or journey maps are created. They are fast to produce, easy to run as a workshop exercise, and effective at surfacing gaps in knowledge: if a quadrant stays empty, the team knows exactly what research is missing. Used well, an empathy map turns abstract research findings into a concrete reference the whole team can design against.
