Accessibility

Accessibility is an essential practice in the design of digital products and services, with the goal of making them accessible to as many users as possible, including people with visual, auditory, motor, or cognitive disabilities. It is a fundamental principle that should be integrated from the earliest stages of the design process.

Accessibility covers aspects such as sufficient color contrast, so that text is easy to read, a website that can be fully accessed using only the keyboard, alternative text for images (for people who use screen readers), sufficiently large button and touch target sizes (for people with motor difficulties), captions for video content, and a clear information structure that is easy to follow even with assistive technologies. There are internationally recognized standards, such as WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines), which provide specific criteria to check.

The main objective is to eliminate any barriers to use caused by the way the product was designed. In practice, a properly developed application or website from an accessibility perspective allows all users to complete the same actions, regardless of whether they use a screen reader, navigate exclusively using the keyboard, or have a visual impairment.

Accessible design is beneficial for all users, not exclusively for people with disabilities. For example, adequate color contrast makes text easier to read on a screen in strong sunlight, while efficient keyboard navigation is also useful for people without disabilities who prefer this method of interaction. When implemented correctly, accessibility improves the overall user experience, going beyond the scope of a single target group.
