What is Web Accessibility?

Simply put, web accessibility means designing and developing websites, apps, and tools so that people with disabilities can use them1. This includes people with auditory, cognitive, neurological, physical, speech, and visual impairments2. Think of it as making sure that everyone has the same opportunity to access and enjoy the web.

It’s about removing barriers and making sure that no one is left out5. It's not just about being inclusive but also about ensuring that your website works in a wide range of situations. For example, accessibility features can help people using a slow internet connection or people who are in a loud or bright environment.

Why Should You Care?

You might be thinking, "Okay, that's nice, but why does it matter to me?". Well, here’s the deal:

It's the Right Thing to Do: It’s about treating all users with respect and ensuring that everyone has equal access to information and services.

It Impacts a Lot of People: Did you know that 16% of the world’s population, or 1.3 billion people, have some kind of disability? That's a huge portion of your potential audience, and when we design for accessibility, we’re designing for a more inclusive world.

It Benefits Everyone: Accessibility doesn't just help people with disabilities. It can make your website more user-friendly for everyone. Think about it: captions on videos help those in noisy environments, and clear layouts help all users navigate easily.

It's the Law: In many places, including the U.S., the European Union and Canada, accessibility is not just a nice to have, it’s the law. Legal suits are on the rise for websites that are not accessible. By building accessible websites, you’re not just ensuring compliance but also avoiding legal risks.

It Makes Good Business Sense: It improves overall user experience and satisfaction, can enhance your brand, drive innovation, and extend your market reach.

Key Elements of Web Accessibility

So, how do we make the web more accessible? Here are a few key areas to keep in mind:

Alternative Text (Alt Text): Make sure you provide descriptive text for all images so that people using screen readers can understand what they are.

Color Contrast: Ensure sufficient contrast between text and background colors so that it is readable.

• Keyboard Navigation: Make sure all website functionality can be accessed using only a keyboard, since not everyone uses a mouse.

Clear Structure: Use headings and labels to organize your content and make it easy to understand.

Captions and Transcripts: Provide captions for videos and transcripts for audio content so that they are usable by people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Consistent Navigation: Ensure that navigation elements are in the same place on every page of your website.
